One additional existential challenge and trend that had detrimental effect on the Haitian healthcare system - is the absence of a reward system (including better pay and benefits) that aims at retaining talent in the medical field in Haiti. As many of us know quite well, becoming a nurse or a doctor in Haiti does not require huge financial investment from Haitian students or individuals parents. So the Haitian state bears the burden of investing in developing the capacity to support the system. When graduate students leave for better opportunities to other industrialized and more advanced countries to practice, the state then registers a sunk cost or deficit which over a long period of time becomes an even bigger burden in establishing a real and sustainable system. less
